This alt-country album is from a 1997 recording direct from the soundboard at the Swingin' Doors farewell performance at the Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco. Music performed in a bar has a special bumpy charm.
Weighing in 17 songs, all but 4 are written by Jenifer McKitrick and Dwight Been. Earlier they did a few shows around San Francisco, including at the laundromat/bar Brainwash as country duo Dwight and Jenny.
This recording had been in Stephane's closet since '97 and we talked recently and she had them digitized, mailed me a thumb drive, and I began learning how to master a song.
The band loved messing with cover songs, and we had a blast while roughing up Black Dog with a rockabilly sensibility, and making All Tomorrow's on vocals Parties appropriate for square dancing.
The rest are songs by Dwight or me. I won't try here to critique the songs or the record, but suffice it to say that that farewell show was four sets long and we played I think 54 songs that day, and all the songs we chose to offer up feel like a good representation of the band.As for personal anecdotes about the songs, Dwight wrote Red Hot Redhead Rebel after I told him about how Lord Huckleberry gave me a dresser from storage at a hotel he ran and there was something in a drawer-a 50s pinup girl magazine. Thank you, Brian.
Jennifer Saxer had a hippie poem on her wall that she had written called Earth Providing so I made it into a song, so thanks to you as well.
And special thanks to Carolyn Getson, founder of the Bettys, for sending me a letter that included the sentences "Write a song called Pantyhose and Beer, It has to be country."
Thanks for listening, you are who it's made for, and to those of you who make purchases, your support is appreciated beyond the value of the money by far. Supporting independent music should be an automatic ticket to sainthood.
    Hope you enjoy the record.

I was doing my best to look conservative I needed a job break bad On the way to that most important interview I put a runner in the only pantyhose I had So I bought a black marker at the corner store Cause you see these pantyhose were black And I colored in my leg where the hole was But you see it didn't quite exactly match So I went back down to that corner store For pantyhose and beer And you know I will always be back for more Pantyhose and beer Well I wasn't looking too pulled together And anyway it was starting to rain I decided to wait for better weather And go on home and try it later again And I went back down to that corner store for Pantyhose and beer And you know I'll always be back for more Pantyhose And beer

I WIll Go On 03:07
I don't understand much about love or much about you I'd like to go out dancing tonight like we used to do But I know you won't go anywhere now with me And I know there's no way it could possibly be It's a worn out romance And I don't stand a chance Cause we're through me and you But I know that when you said that you were leaving me That I knew you were already gone And I know every day you get further away And I don't know how I will go on I will go on and get up and work from sun to sun each day I will go on and do the things I usually do I will go on even though God knows I can't I know I will I will go on and love you without you There's not anything wrong with me what's the matter with you Don't take advice from your so-called friends do what you wanna do So come on now come on have a good time with me Cause you know in your heart that's the way it should be Let's go check out the scene If you know what I mean Just us two me and you But I know that when you said that you were leaving me That I knew you were already gone And I know every day you get further away And I don't know how I will go on I will go on and get up and work from sun to sun each day I will go on and do the things I usually do I will go on even though God knows I can't I know I will I will go on and love you without you

about

Diana Glaub, co-founder of my first band the Bettys was also one of this band's founding members (in the photo). She was with us on our 1995 studio album unhinged, which is available here.
When she left for Alaska, Todd Duda replaced her on drums, and Todd is the drummer for this album.
It is worth noting that Jenifer, Dwight, and Diana met at Kent State. Jenifer's very first date at college as a 17 year old freshman was wthDwight, who asked me to see a movie while riding on the campus loop bus.
Stephanie, who attended Yale instead, has been punished for that by enduring hearing Kent references, random unfamiliar names, and tales of the NE Ohio punk/new wave scene in the late 70s/early 80s.
She should have gone to Kent. Among her classmates were Jodie Foster and Jennifer Beals (who likely deserves all the credit for Stephanie's top-notch dance moves), but Patty Donahue from the Waitresses was in my French class and she taught me how to play pinball at Walter's Cafe. Walter's had a great sign. "Good food takes time. If you can't wait, don't."
I should mention that we were friends with photographer Elisabeth Fall at Kent as well, and we had many fun shoots, and the one on the cover is hers, taken at Scottish pub Edinburgh Castle in SF where we played frequently.
